DISCOVER A “DAY IN THE LIFE”
AT ADVANCED NAVIGATION🕵️♀️
Meet Katherine! She’s a photonics engineer at Advanced Navigation. That means she works with light, lasers, fibre coils, and other high-tech tools that help robots and vehicles find their way.
On a typical day, you might find Katherine in the lab, experimenting with how light moves through fibre coils. These coils are made of glass strands so thin, they’re smaller than a piece of hair! She also helps invent new technologies that can explore places across Earth and even beyond to the Moon!
Together with her team, Katherine uses lasers and light to help cars, ships, airplanes, and spacecraft navigate and explore safely. In other words, Katherine is measuring the world with beams of light!
Pull-out quote from Katherine: “My favourite part of the job is that it feels like science and magic combined. I love that something as commonplace as light can be used to achieve such grand things and make our lives better.”
Meet Katherine! Learn how she and her team are shaping the future of navigation!
🏆UNCOVER NAVIGATION PATHWAYS
Check out these great tips and pathways for future careers in navigation, robotics and technology!
How can you start your STEM journey? Here are our top tips:
Learn how to read maps
• Whether it’s a treasure map or a printed world map, learning how to read them helps you build spatial awareness and problem-solving skills. These are super useful for careers like engineering, robotics, and even space exploration!
Explore coding for drones
• Believe it or not, many drones can be programmed to fly routes all by themselves, no joystick needed! Platforms like Tynker are the perfect entry-level tool if you are just starting to learn how to code.
Join a drones or robotics club
• Drones and robots aren’t just cool, they’re great tools for learning about engineering, electronics, and programming. Joining a club (or starting one with friends) lets you build, fly, and compete while working as a team.
Keep a curiosity journal
• Write down questions, ideas, and discoveries about how the world works. Record your flight paths, experiment ideas, what worked (or didn’t), and new things you’ve learned about drones. Sketch out future drone designs or make up cool missions for rescue robots of the future!
